How To Do Victory Rolls

If you are looking to learn How To Do Victory Rolls, you’ve come to the right place. My friend Nikki Napalm of Southern California has put together a video detailing how to do victory rolls. She has done hair for my shoots on several occasions and I can honestly say she really knows her stuff and how to do victory rolls. I wrote a post on how to do reverse victory rolls which detailed how to do reverse victory rolls but it also talked about he history of the hairstyle and how it came to be. Victory rolls were a way for the ladies to make a fashion statement attesting to the victory of WWII like the pilots of the war did a victory roll when they shot down an enemy.

Another thing I wanted to touch on in this post, besides the video, is the new pin up hairstyles book called Retro Do’s.  This book was put together by a woman who’s daughters do a bit of pin up modeling too in Southern California.I was fortunate enough to photo one of her daughters at Ink-N-Iron 2009 for the pin up contest and car show. I ordered a copy of Retro Do’s myself and I have to say it’s a great book for the money. Some of the images are a little dark but they show exactly how to get that look of a great pin up hairstyle with a touch of edge. In this book you will definitely learn how to do victory rolls, as well as many other types of rolls and styles.

How To Do Reverse Victory Rolls

Reverse Victory Rolls

The name Victory Rolls or Reverse Victory Rolls, came from a maneuver a fighter plane would do with the victory of an aerial battle.  After WWII the ladies started calling this type of hairdo with the large barrel curls, victory rolls or reverse victory rolls, as a fashion statement attesting to the victory of WWII.

Reverse Victory Rolls The Old Way

Back in those days there were no blow dryers and other hairstyling products like there are today, so to start this style of hairdo the hair would be done with wet set pin curls and left to dry over night. In the morning the curls were brushed out somewhat to give the hair body, volume and curl. Then the curls were brushed up along side of the head or wound around the fingers to form large barrel curls or reverse victory rolls and fastened to the head with hairpins.

Variations of the hairstyle can be made from here with larger victory rolls, smaller ones and ones on the front of the head. Any numbers of variations are possible once the initial style is mastered. One of the easiest ways to make or help make your rolls is with a “hair rat”. A hair rat is a mat or roll made from your own shedded hair. They were used “back in the day” to help with rolls and waves with various hairstyles. They’re good to use especially if they are made of your own hair because of matching hair color.

Hair rats can be molded and shaped to fir the purpose you need, and are free and eco-friendly too. The fastest and easiest way to make a hair rat is combing the shedded hair out of your own brush and save it until you have enough to make the rat. Once you have enough, roll it between your palms to make a ball or sausage shaped rat. Simply but it can take a bit of time depending on how fast or slow you shed your hair.

The term and show of burlesque was made popular during the period of 1860-1940′s America when it was usually done in a variety show atmosphere in cabarets or night clubs. Often with a comedic flare and a flare for the dramatic, burlesque is making a HUGE comeback in America as well as Europe.

While European burlesque slowly declined, American burlesque flourished and focused on female nudity.  This went on until it’s decline in the 1970′s. A resurgence in burlesque has started in the 1990′s in America and continued on until now. Contests and conventions have risen out of the love of modern burlesque and caused a great stir among showgirls today.

The Beehive hairdo also known as the B-52 was a hairstyle made famous in the 50′s and created by Margaret Vinci of Margaret Vinci Coiffures in Chicago. The name B-52 for the Beehive hairstyle came from the similar look that a B-52 fortress bomber has with it’s bulb like nose.

The music group “The B-52′s” Got their name from the hairstyle and also wear Beehives in their videos and in concert.  Amy Winehouse was one of the more prominent modern wearers of the Beehive hairdo.  Here we are featuring several videos on How To Do A Beehive Hairdo.

The bouffant hairdo was a hairstyle that was mainstream in the mid-to-late 18th century western Europe. Thought to be created for Marie Antoinette, because she had thin hair and desired to create an illusion of having lot’s of very full hair. In more modern times, late 60′s early 70′s, the bouffant hairdo was popular in Western culture, specifically the United States.  It was created in the 1960s, back-combing the hair and using large amounts of hair spray. The modern bouffant is thought to have been created by Raymond Bessone, a British hairdresser of the 1950s and 1960s.

Many types of Bouffant hairdos exist but one popular one is is made famous by the ladies of the James Bond, and this lady in the video does it nicely!!!

Remember this style takes some time and practice, so keep at it and you will get it before you know it. Before long you will be doing this style in a fraction of the time it took you when you first started practicing this hairstyle. Remember anything worth doing is worth doing well.

How To Do Wet Set Pin Curls – Part 1

If you want to learn how to do Authentic Pin Up Hairstyles, then you need to know how to do Wet Set Pin Curls. Pin Curls were typically done wet, which is the reason it is called the wet set pin curls. If you watch a tutorial with someone using a curling iron, run as fast as you can. This is not true authentic pin curling.

How long does it take to do Wet Set Pin Curls

With real Wet Set Pin Curls the hair is set over a period of 7-8 hours, usually when you sleep. The reason for this is the hair will take shape and will NOT fall out of shape like a curling ironed hair style will if brushed. A dry set or hot set curl using hot rollers won’t hold up to the heat outdoors, moisture and/or humidity as well as a wet set.

A hot set might last the night but it won’t last to the next day, you’ll end up having to hot set it again. Dry hot setting can damage your hair, and if you’re a bottle blonde you really don’t want this. A good wet set will loosen up a bit over time but can last for days on end.

Wet Set Pin Curls Video Tutorial

This  video is part 1 of  a 2 part tutorial. Here is a list of things to have on hand when you do this:

1. comb
2. wire bristle brush
3. double pronged clips or flat bobby pins
4. hairspray
5. time!! (the curls take a while to set and you’ll need to a minimum of 7 hrs, it is suggested to do while you sleep.)

These are optional:

1. spritzer bottle with water
2. gel or setting lotion
3. end papers
4. hairnet or scarf
